Bet Hedging
Calculator.
Enter the original stake and the odds on two opposite outcomes to estimate a matched hedge stake, total exposure and potential result for either outcome.
Plan the
hedge.
Use the original stake and the odds on the opposite outcome to estimate a hedge amount that targets the same gross payout on either side.
For a two-outcome market, enter the original bet and a hedge on the opposite outcome.
Enter both sets of odds and an original stake to estimate a matched payout.
Calculator results are estimates based on the figures entered. Hedging does not guarantee a profit, and operator rules, changing odds, market suspension, voids, limits and settlement terms can affect the result. Always verify final details directly with the bookmaker before placing a bet.
A second bet.
A different trade-off.
Hedging is a betting strategy that introduces a second bet on the outcome opposite to the original selection. It can be used to reduce exposure or lock in a more predictable result when the market and timing make that possible.
In a simple two-outcome market that must produce a winner, one wager can win while the other acts as a form of insurance. However, hedging can reduce potential upside, may result in a loss, and may not be practical once odds, betting limits or market rules are considered.
Hedging multiple outcomes is possible, but this calculator is designed for a straightforward two-outcome hedge. It is an educational tool—not a guarantee of profit or acceptance by any bookmaker.
Ways to place
a hedge.
The right approach depends on available markets, applicable rules, odds and your own risk limits.
Simple hedging
Place the opposite outcome on the same sports betting site, subject to the operator’s markets, limits and rules.
Cross-bookmaker comparison
Compare the opposite outcome across different bookmakers to see whether available prices change the hedge calculation.
Bonus or matched hedging
Some bettors use promotional funds or conditions as part of a hedge. Always read wagering requirements and terms carefully.
Four inputs.
Clearer maths.
Use the same odds format for the original and opposite outcome, then check the estimated matched result.
Select the odds format
Choose Decimal, Fractional or American odds to match the format displayed by the sportsbook you are reviewing.
Input the original stake
Enter the amount you planned to place on the original selection. The calculator uses South African Rand.
Enter both odds
Add the original odds and the hedge odds for the opposite outcome in the same two-outcome market.
Review the result
The calculator estimates the hedge stake, combined exposure, matched payout and profit or loss if either outcome wins.
Decimal: a number greater than 1. Fractional: positive numerator and denominator, written as 1/2 or 3/1. American: +100 or higher, or -100 or lower.
What the results
mean.
The calculator shows estimates only. Always check final prices and betting terms directly with the operator.
Hedge Amount
The estimated stake to place on the opposite outcome in an effort to equalise the gross payout across either outcome.
Total Bet Amount
The original stake plus the estimated hedge stake. This is the total amount exposed across both wagers.
Outcome Profit
The estimated profit or loss after subtracting total stakes from the payout if the respective outcome wins.
Matched Payout
The estimated gross payout from either side when the two wager amounts are mathematically matched.
An illustrative
two-outcome hedge.
Example only: R100 on Outcome A at decimal odds of 2.20, with Outcome B available at 2.10.
This result is a mathematical estimate. It assumes both bets are accepted at the stated odds, apply to mutually exclusive outcomes and settle normally under the operator’s rules.
Hedging can change
risk—not remove it.
Calculators can explain figures, but no betting strategy removes uncertainty or guarantees a positive outcome.
Keep the decision within your limits
Do not use a hedge to chase losses or increase exposure beyond what you can afford. Set a budget, take breaks and seek support if gambling becomes stressful or difficult to control.
Hedging
questions.
Quick answers about hedge calculations and the practical limits of this strategy.
01 Why do I need a hedging calculator?+
A hedging calculator saves time when estimating the opposite stake needed to target a similar payout across two outcomes. It is particularly useful when odds are not round numbers.
02 Is this hedging calculator free to use?+
Yes. This MZANSI ODDS calculator is free to use as an educational planning tool. It does not place bets or connect to bookmaker accounts.
03 Is hedging forbidden in online sportsbooks?+
Bookmaker rules differ. Operators can apply market rules, stake limits, promotional restrictions or other terms. Always read the applicable sportsbook terms before placing any bet.
04 Does a hedge guarantee profit?+
No. A hedge can reduce or reshape exposure, but it does not guarantee profit. Odds can move, bets can be rejected or limited, and markets can be settled or voided under operator rules.
